The Bride Test By: Helen Hoang

Book Review

Girl loves boy loves girl

This. Book. Wowie, this book. A massive leap up from Helen’s first book in the series, and that one was essentially perfect. The only thing is it didn’t make me feel like this one did! My heart clenched painfully so much while reading this that I had to stop reading for a while due to the pain.

There was so much rawness here. The grief and struggle to overcome it to lead to love was what made the book so powerful.

The growth of Khai was so fun to watch. That final break down scene with the motorcycle fixed it all and had me crying. How could he not know! He obsessed over her cup! Whoever that woman was that questioned him not crying at the funeral, I hope she gets food poisoning! Worth being a catfish for that.

Beautiful Esmerelda was such an inspiring character. I hated how she felt below them. I wanted her to feel accepted and equal with them but she struggled until the very end. I did really like how strong she was in her opinion on how she was more once she realized it. And mentioning Jade! That took way too long!

The two of them just fit perfectly. He cared for her in ways no one ever has, and she accepted him like no one else had. They were made for each other.

The fact that she chose to speak Vietnamese to him solely because it reminded her of home was adorable, and when he chose to say I love you for the first time in that language!!! ️

That wedding had to be super embarrassing. Imagine all that chaos and everyone seeing that you switched brothers and were marrying for a green card? Now your dad who didn’t know you existed walks in? And then the other brother you left walks in? And THEN he discovers you have a daughter just now? And your mom makes a scene? Of course he loves her now, but dang someone say awkward.

The epilogue was perfection. I love that Esmerelda went to college and that her focus is helping people like her. And the whole Khai, Esme, and Jade scene AH!

The whole story was beautiful, I enjoyed it so much more than the books I’ve read recently. I can't wait to read the third one because it seems like Helen just gets better!
